Where Have All The Good Defenders Gone?

When Nadir Belhadj sweetly struck a thunderous volley to open the scoring for Portsmouth against Liverpool at the start of the Christmas football programme it was the 500th in the Premier League this season.

This resulted in the 2009/10 season, beating the 1994/95 season for the record of the fewest games in the Premier League to achieve the feat of hitting this target in the fewest games.

    The role has changed, and a lot of what was “legal” previously is now outlawed. Add to this the inconsistency of ref`s decisions and defenders dare not take a chance on a 50/50 tackle. The advantage is squarely with the attackers.
    At grass-roots level,defence/ goal is n`t a glamour position, and all kids coming through want to be midfielders or strikers. My club at least tries to get kids playing in all positions so they are comfortable on the ball, before we suggest to a “defender” that this may be his strongest position.
